Tagatose is a naturally-occurring sugar found in milk, fruits and vegetables. It is used as a low calorie
sweetener and is “generally recognized as safe” with no adverse side effects reported after many
years of use in foods and beverages. Tagatose is safe for diabetics because it will not raise blood sugar
levels. In addition to its use as a sweetener, tagatose has been found to have a number of health
benefits. Tagatose was found to have an antihyperglycemic effect in animals and humans is showing
promise as a treatment for type 2 diabetes and obesity. In addition to its antihyperglycemic effects,
Tagatose has been found to have an effect on blood lipid levels in animals and in humans. For
example, in one study mice fed a diet in which high sucrose was replaced with an equivalent amount
of Tagatose had reduced cholesterol, triglycerides and atherosclerosis compared to mice on the diet
containing sucrose. In a human clinical trial, patients with type 2 diabetes taking tagatose were found
to have improved HDL (the “good cholesterol”) levels. In other studies, type 2 diabetics taking
Tagatose showed a decrease in HbA1c (a measure of high blood sugar) and serum triglycerides.
Clinical research has also shown that tagatose acts as a prebiotic by promoting the growth of good
bacteria in the gut which are essential to maintaining a healthy digestive system.
Polydatin is found in certain plants and foods including grapes and red wine. It is a natural precursor
to a better known beneficial natural compound, resveratrol. Interest in polydatin is an extension of a
conundrum in science known as the French Paradox. This alludes to the observation that the citizens
of France appear to have a lower rate of coronary heart disease (CHD) than would be predicted by
their intake in saturated fats, as compared to similar populations. Many people have suggested that
their consumption of red wine somehow prevents the disease from manifesting. This observation led
to research attempting to identify the active constituents of red wine responsible for this paradox.
One compound identified that has garnered the most attention is resveratrol. Many studies have
since shown that resveratrol has many beneficial properties. It is an antioxidant and appears to guard
against cardiovascular diseases, aging and cancer. As a result, resveratrol has found its way into many
dietary supplements. However, resveratrol has some drawback. It is poorly absorbed by the digestive
system and has a relatively short life-span in the bloodstream. Polydatin is much more soluble than
resveratrol and as a result is better absorbed and has a longer life-span in the blood where it is
converted into resveratrol. Taking polydatin actually leads to higher blood levels of resveratrol than
are achieved by taking resveratrol itself.
